Dear Members Firstly an acknowledgment that this newsletter for 2006 is long overdue. The committed has managed to meet twice during the first half of the year, most recently on 6 June, and dealt with a number of issues, as discussed below .BUT FIRST…THE NEXT AFLANZ CONFERENCE Warning Order Mark Your Diaries The Conference will be held at Trentham Camp on 2 and 3 February 2007. Members will be aware that the conference has previously been held every two years. However DGDLS has invited AFLANZ to hold a joint conference which will also mark the 80th anniversary of the New Zealand Army Legal Corps. The conference format will be the same as last year, with a Corps dinner on Saturday 3 February 2007 Captain Jane Derbyshire NZALS has been nominated by Brigadier Riordan as the DLS point of contact. Your good Secretary shall of course carry out the liaison required on behalf of AFLANZ (unless there is a volunteer !) Please put the dates 2-3 February 2007 in your diaries now! – More details to follow .Survey The Committee considered it would be useful to survey members for their views on the role and direction of the Association. At a recent meeting between the President and DGDLS, the Association’s involvement in submissions to select committee was welcomed. The committee has therefore appointed a sub-committee of Craig Ruane, Roger Fraser and Chris Gallavin to draft some meaningful questions for members to consider and respond to – we expect to circulate a survey questionnaire to all members shortly. Editor of the Review As some of you are aware Alex Conte reluctantly relinquished his position as editor in order to take up a prestigious teaching position overseas. Alex has been a real force in the establishment and success of the Review – many thanks Alex for all your work. The committee is very pleased to advise members that Dr Chris Gallavin, Director of the International Law Programme at Canterbury University, has agreed to take up the role of editor. Chris is a distinguished academic whom many of you will have met at last year’s conference. Welcome, Chris. Annual Prize Whilst a number of entries have been received the prize will not be awarded this year. This is primarily due to the pressure on publication date for the review and our new editor getting his feet under the desk, so to speak, together with the pressure on the newly appointed editor to deal with publication of the Review. Review It is expected the Review will be available from October as usual. Our new editor advises printing should go ahead in September. A number of impressive articles have been provided and the editor advises there is no shortage of good material. We can therefore expect another high quality Review with appeal to an increasing readership. Subs for 2006 Annual fees for membership of the Association are now due. We will be invoicing members shortly. For information the annual sub, as agreed at the last AGM, is$45 incl GST and that the subscription for the New Zealand Armed Forces Law Review for 2006 be $67.50 incl GST discounted to $35 incl GST for AFLANZ members. Please see the attached invoice. Prompt payment is always appreciated. Kind regards Patrick Teagle Secretary |
